Jazz dance has become one of the most popular dance styles in recent years, mainly due to its popularity on television shows, movies, music videos, and commercials. People enjoy watching jazz dancers, as the dancing is fun and energetic. Jazz style of dance is what is seen in many Broadway type shows such as “Cats”. It is a more structured, stage style of dance.
Jazz dancing is a form of dance that showcases a dancer’s individual style and originality. Every jazz dancer interprets and executes moves and steps in their own way. Jazz dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps, and quick turns! To excel in jazz, dancers benefit from a background in ballet, as ballet encourages grace and balance.
This creative class is a perfect introduction for all little dancers. Not only is jazz a part of this class, but also ballet and hip-hop. Children will learn basic locomotor skills, stretching, body awareness, and musicality through imagery and interactive exercises as well as classroom etiquette. This is an introduction to dance. The primary goal is to foster a love of movement. The creative component is quite large. Several fun or special activities happen in each class. For example, a scarf or flag dance can facilitate the dancer’s own physical expression. Taking part in dancing out a narrative helps children to understand that dancing is expression. It is a means of communicating feelings and actions. The vocabulary covered in Creative Preschool Dance is all steps, which a 3 & 4 year old can master and they will build self-confidence. The vocabulary is also set up to prepare students for either Beginning Combo, Beginning Ballet, or Beginning Jazz. The class length is 30 minutes, one time per week.
Our ballet-based class which covers a basis of movement found in all dance forms. Beginning Combo expands on the concepts of our Creative Preschool class. The goals of Beginnng Combo are to foster creativity, freedom, and expression in movement, as well as a love for dance. This class includes concepts that are found in an older child’s dance class. By the end of the year in Beginning Combo, the students will be taught to dance set work independently of the teacher and they will memorize a few simple exercises and sequences. The class length is 60 minutes, one time per week.
Our Beginning Jazz students learn the foundations of this exciting dance form by learning to find the rhythm in music, mastering basic arms-legs-head coordination, learning proper body alignment, posture, and learning combinations increasing in length and complexity.
Our Intermediate Jazz students further develop their musicality to understand syncopation in choreography and to make active use of jazz technique and proper alignment. At this point of their study, our students solidify their ability to understand choreography on an emotional level while memorizing its details on a technical level. As students further develop speed and quality of turns, spotting, alignment, and fast footwork, they also focus on self-correction, following vocal instruction, and demonstrating strong vocabulary knowledge. Another main focus of this level is developing further strength in order to allow large and technically advanced leaps and jumps.
